Design for Additive
Problem: Demonstrate practical use cases for additive manufacturing in industry settings
Objective: Introduce additive manufacturing design optimization to a traditional replacement hip design to demonstrate possible material and cost savings without sacrificing structural integrity.
Solutions: I started by recreating a standard hip implant in SolidWorks, then I designed the unit cell of a cross-pattern lattice structure that would replace the main body of the implant. I then repeated the cell into a pattern that was large enough to replace the solid volume of the implant's body, and using an EOS SLS 3D printer I printed scaled models of the optimized hip implant.
